Bulgaria, in the South Eastern corner of Europe, is a superb location for photographing wildlife. Our Mountain Vulture and Lakeside Pelican tour will take a small group to two distinct locations with the objective of capturing first class images of some iconic bird species.
Our plan for 2018 is to concentrate on a specific ‘hit list’ of highly unusual subjects, making the most of the winter season and the wild environment that Bulgaria offers. With only a small group of 4 clients and 2 dedicated guides we can make sure everyone gets the attention and opportunities they need to ensure the best possible results.
After arrival at Sofia airport we will be met by our expert local guides and then transferred south by minibus to the town of Kerkini in northern Greece. We will spend three nights in a small family run hotel and use this base to explore the water birds of the surrounding area. The key target species will be Dalmatian Pelicans, which can be photographed at close quarters from both the shore and a specially adapted boat. This will hopefully enable us to capture some stunning close range, low angle images of these magnificent birds in groups on the water. We also hope to see White Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Greater Flamingo, Great Egret and various waterfowl during these sessions.
Day four will see us making an early start for the long, scenic drive to the beautiful Eastern Rhodope mountain region of southern Bulgaria. This un-spoilt and rural area is home to some of the countries most spectacular birds of prey and we will spend three days photographing these amazing species. Using comfortable lodge accommodation as our base we will use a number of custom-built hides for photography. The key target species will be the impressive Griffon Vultures and Black Vultures but we may also be lucky enough to see other birds of prey like the White-tailed Eagle and Golden Eagle. There is even a chance of mammals too with Wolf or Red Fox visiting the feeding sites.
On the morning of day eight, we will be transferred back to Sophia airport for the return flight to the UK.
This trip is a great chance to capture rare images of interesting European wildlife and the small group size combined with expert tuition and guidance should ensure everyone makes the most of theses opportunities. As always the UK based Wild Arena photography guide will be on hand throughout the trip to assist with the challenges of getting the best from our cameras and we pride ourselves on running inclusive, friendly and informative trips.
Day 1: Arrival
After arrival at Sofia Airport, we will be met by our local guides and be transferred south (for approximately 4 hours) to Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece, where we will be staying for three nights in a small family-run hotel near the lake.
For the next 2 days will be occupied with bird photography at Lake Kerkini, where the main focus will be on the Dalmatian Pelicans. We will try to photograph the Dalmatian Pelicans in the lake both from the lake banks and from a specially adapted boat. The lake also offers good opportunities to photograph the White Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Greater Flamingo, Great Egret and various waterfowl.
As per day 3.
We will spend the day transferring to the Eastern Rhodopes mountain region. The approximately 6 hour scenic drive will take us to our base in a lodge in the area of a town of Krumovgrad.
Three days of bird and mammal photography from hides in the Eastern Rhodopes.
The main photography targets in the Eastern Rhodopes will be the birds of prey coming to feed on the carcass at the feeding sites managed and prepared by our guides. Each morning we will be taken to stay in the hides, in front of which bait will be placed to attract two species of vultures – Griffon Vulture and Black Vulture, and occasionally some other birds of prey like the White-tailed Eagle and Golden Eagle. An occasional Wolf or Red Fox may turn up at the feeding table too.
