Red Kites are a target species for many wildlife photographers and there can be no better location to view and photograph them than Gigrin Farm in mid-wales. Our ‘Wild Red Kite Photography Workshop’ offers the opportunity to use the largest of the centres; specialist photographic hides, allowing a tremendous view of the feeding site that is used every afternoon.

After arrival at the centre, we will get the small group together for a briefing on the best techniques and approaches for capturing images of these magnificent birds in flight. We will discuss not only choice of lenses and angles but also recommended setting for sharp focus, correct exposure and adequate movement control. We will then walk down to the tower hide, booked for our exclusive use, and set up our equipment with excellent, elevated views. The hide has ample room for everyone to set up tripods and the covered rear section offers protection from the wind and a bench for breaks in photography.

At 2pm (winter time), the staff with drive into the field overlooked by the hide and put out the feed for the birds. This daily routine not only attracts impressive numbers of Red Kites but also Common Buzzard, Crows and Raven. Numbers of Kites vary depending on the season and weather but the leaner winter months usually attract 300 – 400 birds over the course of several hours. Low season also offers the key advantage of the light simply being lower in the sky as the afternoon wears on, allowing for better illumination on the birds in the air. The activity tends to come in waves as different groups of birds move in to feed on the food in the meadow. There should be ample opportunities of birds soaring close to the hide front as well as dropping down to the ground to pick up food. It is also not unusual to see mid air disagreements as various birds try to steal food from each other!
